Muuto: New perspectives on Scandinavian design

The Danish design company, Muuto, will be participating in the one-week exhibition ‘The Danish House’, a dynamic showcase of top-level Danish design and lifestyle brands during Milan Design Week and will be entirely curated by the famed Rossana Orlandi. Muuto is showcasing a variety of their design classics to emphasize the unique Danish design tradition of long-lasting craftmanship, holistic design solutions, functionality, and aesthetics.

New perspectives on Scandinavian design

Bringing refined functionality to the courtyard with Linear Steel

Stepping outside Rossana Orlandi’s courtyard with Muuto’s Linear Steel Series, designed by Danish designer, Thomas Bentzen: Muuto’s collection of outdoor designs is distinct and modern while never compromising on comfort. Made with enduring, weather-resistant finishes in a bold range of colors, Muuto’s outdoor designs will bring a sense of Scandinavian ease to the Italian atmosphere and warm tones. For the courtyard of Rossana Orlandi’s gallery, Muuto’s Linear Steel Series will eventually provide the ideas of functionality and longevity, joined by understated details for a refined expression. Inspired by the notion of meetings—the meetings of lines, the meetings of shapes, and the meetings of materials— Muuto’s outdoor designs aim to invite the exhibitors to socially meet up and discuss their gallery visit.

Facilitating a social, yet harmonious dining setting with the Workshop Chair

Designed by award-winning Danish designer, Cecilie Manz, the Workshop Chairs in oak brings a playful approach to the wooden chair. The design creates a new perspective on archetypical Scandinavian design through its thin back shell and slightly curved seat that gives the chair its distinct look. The Workshop Chairs express exactly what we want a wooden chair to be: Simple, quiet, and modest, adding an understated character to its surroundings while taking up close to no space visually and physically. The design brings a sense of familiarity, allowing you to feel intuitively at ease with it. The idea was to make it just archetypal enough for it to be relatable for anyone. The Workshop Chair didn’t need any explanation: it does the explaining on its own. Displaying the Workshop Chairs for the dining setting in the Danish House, elicit for a light yet robust and functional expression—exactly how we recall Scandinavian design.

Bringing simplicity and elegance to the living room with the Outline Sofa

The Outline Sofa adds new perspectives to the classic Scandinavian design sofas of the 1960's, marrying the ideals of simplicity and function into one. With the design taking its name from its strong outline of a sofa, the Outline Series is clean and elegant on the outside with a deep seat and soft cushioning on its inside. The Outline Series has an expression that is at once elegant yet timeless, elevated by its lines referencing architectural shapes alongside its curved armrests, giving the design a distinct appearance across various sizes and variants.

Enlightening the space through clusters of soft and playful lights

The Strand Pendant Lamp is designed with soft, playful forms for a modern expression. The design is made in a sprayed cocoon material that consists of tiny strands for a complex, intriguing structure that, paired with its modern form, gives the Strand Pendant Lamp an almost cloud-like appearance. With its cocoon material filtering light through for a warm, comfortable glow, the Strand Pendant Lamp hovers lightly in space, bringing comfort, harmony and a refined sensitivity to the gallery of Rossana Orlandi.

About Muuto

Muuto is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition characterized by enduring aesthetics, functionality, craftsmanship, and an honest expression. By expanding this heritage with forward-looking materials, techniques, and bold creative thinking, their ambition is to deliver new perspectives on Scandinavian design.

The name Muuto comes from the Finnish word muutos, meaning new perspective. By drawing on their Scandinavian roots, they create functional, well-crafted pieces with an enduring aesthetic and an honest expression. Before they introduce a new Muuto design, they want to be sure that it adds a new perspective, building on a Scandinavian strong heritage but in a modern context - somehow improving or challenging what has been made before.

They do that, by searching for designers who share this same mindset. Creatives with a contemporary take on tradition, who embrace the essence of Scandinavian design, and who are keen on exploring a forward-thinking approach to natural materials, comfort, craftsmanship, and durability. Individuals who bring a fresh set of eyes to creating something new, as well as new ways of reimagining something old.
