For intermittent catheter users, bladder emptying can come with discomfort, inconvenience, and health risks. The Danish company Coloplast has taken an important step to change that narrative. Luja is the only intermittent catheter (IC) with Micro-hole Zone Technology for both men and women. By replacing traditional eyelets with over 50 micro-holes for women* and 80 for men, Luja is designed to completely empty the bladder in a free flow1,2 and reduce the risk of UTIs3, one of the greatest challenges for IC users.
Luja™ stands out for its thoughtful design – discrete, ensuring ease of use and a feeling of confidence in intermittent catheterization for the users. It was developed through deep user involvement and a commitment to improve the individual’s experience. Luja female, in particular, addresses an important unmet need for female users4 as its design enables no discomfort during catheterisation2, empowering women with a product that fits into daily life.
With Luja female, we have designed a catheter with both the environment and user in mind, in line with our ambition to balance the wellbeing of the people with the planet. Not only is it produced with reduced plastic usage and lower CO2 emissions compared to reference product**, it is also designed to reduce the risk of UTIs. This broader societal benefit, combined with the product’s elegant design, earned Luja female™ the Danish Design Award 2024 in the Better Health category.
