TAKT: Sustainable furniture design

November 1, 2022

Rethinking the way to design, build and sell furniture, TAKT believes in bringing high-quality design to more people in revolutionary, sustainable, and transparent ways. They look to the future with their sights set far beyond furniture. Because society needs new ideas about how to make quality goods accessible to more people, and we need to do it in a sensible way that does not adversely affect life on the planet.

TAKT x Mads Nørgaard

Together with Danish fashion powerhouse Mads Nørgaard, TAKT has co-produced a special edition chair to raise awareness for responsible consumption. The result is a light and elegant chair made of FSC-certified oak and recycled steel upholstered with Mads Nørgaard’s iconic black and white stripes – produced in textile from Danish Kvadrat.

As Craftsmanship is key to responsible consumption, TAKT and Mads Nørgaard have invited five artisans to represent care and good craftsmanship. Each artist dedicated a day to showcase their art at Nørgaard Paa Strøget’s shop window in central Copenhagen. Digitally amplified with the hashtag #sitdownandreflect, they contributed to the need for good craftsmanship and responsible consumption. 100% of profits went to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and a project supporting the UN’s 12th SDG-goal dedicated to raising awareness of responsible consumption and production.

"The world needs new ideas to make quality goods available to more people, and we need to do it in a sensible way that does not negatively affect life on the planet. Sustainable solutions have to be used by the many in order to make an impact in the way we consume."

From your point of view, how is creativity changing and improving the quality of life in Denmark?

“The world needs new ideas to make quality goods available to more people, and we need to do it in a sensible way that does not negatively affect life on the planet. Sustainable solutions have to be used by the many in order to make an impact on the way we consume. We need creativity to bring these solutions to the market in an impactful way so they are noticed and picked up. The creative, technological, media and consumer landscape is changing. Rapidly. These changes affect everything in how we think, plan develop and execute. It will be our ability to adapt, to participate in culture, and to be part of the daily lives of our consumers that will allow us to exist as a business. And in doing so, purpose and sustainability, are key topics that will inform the way we go to market.”

Why is innovation essential to stay ahead?

“At TAKT we work with innovation in a structural way. We call it 70:20:10. Meaning that 70% of our resources will go to ideas that we know will drive the business. 20% will go towards innovating the things we know works. And 10% go towards experimentations, where ideally nobody else have been. That way we will have a learning organizational culture, as next time the 20% will become a part of the 70% and the 10% will become a part of the 20%. Like a snowball rolling down the hill getting bigger and bigger.”

How does your company work with sustainability?

“TAKT is a certified B-Corporation. We think businesses should be a force of good. We think that business can accelerate positive change. Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of transparency, responsibility, sustainability, and performance – with the aim of generating value for the business as well as the society and environment. To balance profit and purpose. Our certification is your validation that we do what we say and that we are committed to bringing positive change – through our products and how we conduct ourselves as a company.”
